A small pause before you scroll

A small moment to notice an urge and choose what happens next.

Sometimes opening an app happens before we have quite decided to. If you are trying to stop opening apps without thinking, start with one app you often check on autopilot. The aim is to notice the opening, not to make every phone check a mistake. Keep access to calls, messages, navigation, and anything you need for work or daily responsibilities.

Notice the moment

When you reach for that app, ask what brought you there: a notification, an icon, a quiet moment, or a specific task. On Android, open Settings, then look for Notifications and App notifications. Choose the app and review alerts you do not need; where categories are offered, you can adjust those individually. Keep important alerts enabled. Menu names and controls vary by device and Android version. If the Home screen icon is your cue, touch and hold it, then select or drag it to Remove, where available. Choose Remove rather than Uninstall if you want to keep the app.

Choose what comes next

Before the next check, take one comfortable breath and name what you want to do: reply to a person, find information, or take a break. If you choose to open the app, do that task and then decide whether to stay. For repeated checking, try a time to catch up that fits your day, while keeping urgent contacts reachable. A reminder at opening time cannot manage everything that happens during a long scrolling session. These are small adjustments to try, not a guarantee that checking or screen time will decrease. Review what felt useful and change what did not.

  • Pick one notification or Home screen cue to adjust; you do not have to change every app.
  • Before opening, name the purpose. If it can wait, put the phone down and return to your current task.
  • After using the app, notice whether you did what you intended. Treat the next check as another choice, not a score.
